Department of Community Health and Epidemiology and the Department of Academic Family MedicineAn exciting opportunity exists for a certified Family Medicine practitioner to become a University of Saskatchewan faculty member with an appointment primarily in the Department of Community Health and Epidemiology, with a joint appointment in the Department of Academic Family Medicine. This full-time faculty position combines leadership and scholarship in social accountability and global health along with patient care, teaching, resident and graduate student supervision (as an academic family physician in a community clinic ∕ primary health centre).
The successful physician must be certified with the College of Family Physicians of Canada, fully licensed to practice Family Medicine in the Province of Saskatchewan and possess full credentialing with the Saskatoon Health Region. We are particularly interested in hearing from physicians who are willing to share their knowledge and clinical expertise along with the necessary experience, qualifications and interest in medical education, social accountability and global health.
Leadership in social accountability and experience inglobal health are vital complementary roles of this position. The successful candidate will lead the Division of Social Accountability and its education programs (Global HealthCertificate), teach and mentor students in global health and primary care, and establish an externally funded, dynamic research program.
The Department of Community Health & Epidemiology (CH&E) is a dynamic, cohesive academic department comprising 14 faculty and 34 associate and clinical faculty. We have active graduate programs at the Master's and doctoral levels, and make a vital contribution to the postgraduate and undergraduate education of medical and health sciences students. Areas of current research excellence include child health, Aboriginal peoples' health, socio-behavioural aspects of cancer care, global health, social epidemiology, biostatistical applications to chronic diseases, public health practice, and knowledge transfer. The Division of Social Accountability is located in CH&E. The College of Medicine and specifically CH&E and DAFM, are committed to incorporating social accountability to direct its Clinical activity, Advocacy, Research and Education (CARE Model) activities towards meeting the priority health concerns of local, regional, national and international communities. The College supports a number of programs and initiatives that address health needs in priority areas such as Aboriginal health, primary health care, urban and rural underserved areas, gender and equity, eco-health, immigrant and refugee health and global health.
The Department of Academic Family Medicine (DAFM) is expanding and provides medical education utilizing a distributed model with a teaching complement of 27 University faculty and more than 350 community faculty. The Family Medicine Residency training programs are delivered through our two urban training centres (Saskatoon and Regina) and two rural training centres (Prince Albert and Swift Current) along with additional training provided in the divisions of Family Medicine – Emergency Medicine, Research, Northern Medical Services and Enhanced Skills (Surgical, Anaesthesia & Musculoskeletal) to approximately 100 Residents. The DAFM is an integral participant in all stages of medical education (including distributed medical education) and plays a key role in establishing more generalist content and comprehensive family medicine in the MD education curriculum. Physicians in the DAFM enjoy the benefits of dynamic interdisciplinary team environments to support their clinical, teaching and scholarly activities. Physicians and residents in all locations participate in the provision of a broad range of care including adult medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, aboriginal health, immigrant health and in-hospital/nursing home care.

The College of Medicine utilizes a distributed education model with approximately 275 university faculty and over 800 community faculty distributed throughout all 13 Saskatchewan Health Regions. The College of Medicine is expanding and has a current enrolment of approximately 340 undergraduate medical students and 400 postgraduate medical residents.
The Saskatoon Health Region (SHR) serves more than 300,000 residents in over 100 cities, towns and rural municipalities with approximately 12,000 staff and over 850 physicians. In addition to providing a complete range of health services to residents of central and northern Saskatchewan, the SHR,with its three acute care hospitals – St. Paul's, City, and Royal University –provides tertiary care and much of the associated teaching for the province. The new Children's Hospital will be located at the Royal University Hospital site.
With a population of approximately 230,000, Saskatoon is the largest city in Saskatchewan, boasting small town spirit and big city amenities. World class events, festivals and attractions, a strong arts and music focus; short drive to northern lake country; variety of indoor and outdoor sporting facilities. The city is noted for its outstanding walking and biking trails along the riverbank and excellent education facilities, including the University of Saskatchewan.
