What is Making the Links

Ryan Moz

Making the Links began in 2004, and is a vertical program for students in the undergraduate program at the College of Medicine.  Each year four students are selected to participate in this unique experience and to commit their time to the program for the next two years.

At the core of Making the Links is the concept of service learning, which brings medical students out of the classroom and into the community around them.  Community members and community based organizations collaborate with the College of Medicine to provide training for the students that addresses community health needs.

The program consists of five phases:

Phase 1:  Theoretical Background

Phase 2:  Northern Site

Phase 3:  SWITCH Community Service

Phase 4:  International Site

Phase 5:  Final Report

Making the Links is an amazing opportunity and it has been the most valuable part of my medical school experience so far----it has taught me so much about people, about health, and about myself.  I am much closer to finding that niche where I can impact health both clinical and more upstream work. Rachel Gough,  (Making the Links 2005-2007)
