Orientation and Requirements
Orientation
Students who are selected to participate in the Making the Links program at the College of Medicine are strongly encouraged to review the following resources as part of their orientation for their experiences in Northern Saskatchewan and in Mozambique.
Northern Experience Orientation
Requirements
As a participant in the Making the Links program, you will be required to fulfill the following requirements:
First Year
1) Participate in a Global Health Orientation hosted by the College of Medicine Internationalization Committee. The Global Health 402 course offered through Community Health & Epidemiology is a recommended adjunct to this orientation for students who wish to obtain a deeper understanding of key concepts in Global Health.
2) Participate in Orientation to SWITCH project. Starting in second term work 2 shifts per month as a volunteer. Continue this commitment through to second term of second year.
3) Attend Portuguese 1 language classes.
4) Audit the Aboriginal Health and Healing classs and attend Northern Orientation sessions.
5) Participate in a 6-8 week Northern Experience.
6) Prepare a report on your Northern Experience.
Second Year
1) Facilitate orientation of first year students to Making the Links.
2) Continue SWITCH involvement. Participate in a SWITCH committee. (eg Programming Committee or SWITCH council)
3) Attend Portuguese 2 language classes.
4) Participate in pre-departure international orientation sessions and complete all necessary documentation.
4) Participate in the International Experience in Mozambique.
5) Prepare a report on your International Experience.
Third Year
1) Prepare and present a final report on your experiences in the Making the Links program.
2) Participate in a public presentation about the experience.
3) Facilitate orientation of second year students to international components.
In recognition of these student contributions, and the importance of this program, the College of Medicine will:
1) Develop a curriculum and learning objectives to facilitate this experience.
2) Provide guidance and support throughout the experience.
3) Fund the tuition for the Aboriginal Health and Healing course, Global Health 402 course or equivalent Global Health orientations, and Language Training.
4) Provide financial reimbursement for time during the summer Northern experience of first year in line with current Summer Student Research Project funding.
5) Fund housing and health costs for Northern and International placements.
6) Fund travel and accommodation costs to Mozambique.
