Students who wish to attend USask for supervised research only, for a period of up to 12 months, can apply to be admitted as a Visiting Research Student (VRS). If you are applying as a VRS, you will follow an alternative application and admission procedure. Please follow the link below.

Before you apply

All master's, doctoral, graduate certificate and postgraduate diploma students apply online but the application procedures can vary between programs.

Decide on a program and review the program's page for the following information:

  1. Deadlines - Academic units set their own deadlines for applications. Keep in mind that academic units make decisions on scholarship and fellowships at set times during the year. These vary from unit to unit and may be different from application deadlines.
  2. Admission requirements - Requirements for graduate programs will vary. Please check the program's page to confirm the specific requirements.
  3. Application process - Some departments require you to identify a potential supervisor or research area before applying and some require additional documentation.

Applying

What to expect once you begin:

The online application takes about 30 minutes to complete. You may start an application, save it and return to it any time before the application deadline.

Start an application

You will need to have ready:

  • The names and email addresses of your referees for your letters of recommendation.

    • Ideally, the email addresses provided for referees should be their professional email addresses from their post-secondary institution or organization.

  • Your academic history from all post-secondary institutions you have attended. Transcripts from all post-secondary institutions a student has attended will be required.

  • Visa or MasterCard for online payment of $120 application fee. Payment by Flywire is available for international applicants. This payment is non-refundable and processing on an application will not be done prior to the payment being received.

Completing the application:

Once you have filled out and submitted your application, and paid your application fee, you will be able to return to your application to upload your supplemental items (such as unofficial transcripts, test scores etc.), and to provide reference contact information for your letters of recommendation. These are entered in the “Supplemental Items & Documents” tab on your application.

Your application will not be considered complete until you upload all necessary supplemental items outstanding, so it is recommended that you do this right away after initially submitting your application.

Supplemental Items
The supplemental item requirements vary between graduate programs. Be sure that you have carefully reviewed the requirements for the program to which you are applying on the program’s page. This information can be found in the “Submitting Required Documents” section near the bottom of the program page. If you have questions or require support for submitting your supplemental items, you may contact the Graduate Administrator for your academic unit. Contact information for each academic unit can also be found near the bottom of each program page.

Letters of Recommendation
When you enter the contact information of your referees in the “Recommendation requests” section of the “Supplemental Items & Documents” tab, those individuals will receive an automatic e-mail requesting that they respond by submitting a response for your letters of recommendation. Your application will remain incomplete until all references have responded. In the “Recommendation requests” section, you can check the status of letters of recommendation, send reminders to your references, or cancel requests and create new ones if you need to replace a referee with someone new.

Once you have submitted all required supplemental items, and your referees have responded, the application status on your “My Account” page will be updated to “Complete”.

Application fee payment

A non-refundable application fee of $120 CDN is required before your application will be submitted and processed. When preparing your application, please plan to pay your application fee online using Visa or Mastercard. International students will have the option to pay using Flywire.

If you are unable to pay your application fee online, you may call 1-306-966-5788 for assistance.
