A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
“Those who have torches will pass
them on to others”
- Plato
We are pleased to announce the College of Medicine Mentoring Program as a welcome and critical component of students, residents, faculty, researchers, and staff career development. The overall goal of the program, which is led by Dr. Femi Olatunbosun, Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs, is to first develop healthy, successful individuals by guiding them on career paths which follow their personal goals, by helping meet their departments, and college’s mission and utilize their strongest assets.
The purpose of the Mentoring Program is twofold. Its primary aim is to mentor a medical trainee, a faculty member, a researcher through the challenges of first choosing, and then establishing a career, understanding the academic and research environment and finding life balance. A second purpose of almost equal importance is to provide established faculty with opportunities to make a difference in the professional lives of junior colleagues in the sharing of their professional experiences and expertise. Hence, we intend that both mentors and their protégés will benefit from the communication and contribution that ensues in the mentoring process. Finally, we expect that the College of Medicine as a whole will be a significant benefactor from this initiative. Ideally, the Mentoring Program will serve as another means for forwarding the College’s mission of offering challenging learning opportunities, supporting research in the field of Medicine, and preparing the next generation of successful and satisfied physicians.
“We don’t accomplish anything in this world alone…and whatever happens is the result of the whole tapestry of one’s life and all the weavings of individual threads from one to another that creates something”, was said by Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. A strong, vibrant team of upper year medical trainees, faculty and researchers is essential to the attainment of our goals and mission. We believe that our senior colleagues all share a professional and collegial responsibility to contribute to our College by participating in the mentoring program. We thank you in advance for your commitment.
I am very happy and excited to work on this College wide mentoring program. I am confident that together we can make a difference and foster an environment where mentoring becomes a part of the culture at the College of Medicine. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions, comments, or if you would like to share with me your thoughts and ideas on our future collaboration.
Sincerely,
Gabriella.
