The Department of Microbiology & Immunology offers, through the College of Arts and Science, an undergraduate degree program leading to 3-year, 4-year, or Honours B.Sc. degrees with a major in Microbiology & Immunology, and a four-year and Honours program leading to B.Sc. degrees in Microbiology and Biotechnology.
The intent of the B.Sc. in Microbiology & Immunology program is to provide graduates with the necessary theoretical knowledge and technical skills to work in the areas of bacteriology, virology, immunology, genetics, molecular biology and biotechnology. In addition, B.Sc. graduates of microbiology are well positioned to undertake further post-graduate training in microbiology or another Life Science discipline, or to enter health professional schools. The department offers courses for students in the Colleges of Arts and Science, College of Dentistry, College of Medicine, College of Nursing, and College of Pharmacy.
The Biotechnology program in addition to microbiology, has an emphasis on ethics, public policy considerations, and commercial issues. Programs can be designed with an emphasis on microbial physiology and pathogenesis, microbial genetics (bacterial, bacteriophage and yeast), virology, tumour biology, immunology and immunopathogenesis.
The Department of Microbiology & Immunology offers graduate programs leading to the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees. The department has expertise necessary for the instruction and training of advanced students in areas that include cellular and molecular biology of eukaryotes, microbial genetics and molecular biology, immunology, medical microbiology, microbial physiology, and virology.
The Mission of the Department of Microbiology & Immunology is to create, preserve and disseminate knowledge in microbiology. Microbiology is the scientific discipline that has arisen from analysing the nature of microbes and host-microbe interactions. The department will strive to instill knowledge and attitudes necessary for life-long learning by undergraduate and graduate students training to be life scientists and health professionals. This mission will be achieved by recruiting appropriate faculty and staff, fostering critical self-appraisal and creating an intellectually stimulating environment.
