The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is located at Saskatoon City Hospital in Saskatoon and Wascana Rehabilitation Centre in Regina. We offer specialized medical and rehabilitation services for people of all ages who have changes in body structure or function resulting in activity or participation limitations. Through an interdisciplinary inpatient program (32 beds in Saskatoon and 33 beds in Regina) or a comprehensive outpatient program, patients are given the tools to improve functional ability and activity participation in their daily lives.
We participate fully in the academic and service mission of the College of Medicine. Our faculty members participate in teaching, research, clinical service and administration. Offering a five year residency for graduates of a recognized medical school, physicians obtain training in the core fields required to gain specialty certification in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
The Rehabilitation Centre is a Saskatoon Health Region program providing assessment and rehabilitation for patients who demonstrate impairment in cognitive functioning, communication, incontinence, mobility, perceptual dysfunction or self care activities, who have complex rehabilitation needs requiring intensive, therapeutic intervention. These impairments may be the result of disease processes, medical conditions, syndromes, or injury. The program utilizes a holistic model of evidence-based and client-centered practice.
The goal of this interdisciplinary approach is to provide patient-focused treatment and educational resources that will facilitate optimal independence, improved function, improved quality of life, well-being, and self-reliant lifestyles. We also develop linkages to other health care providers, community programs and the community-at-large to promote the health and well-being of patients and facilitate reintegration into the community.
As a part of the Saskatoon Health Region, we adopt the mission statement of the region: "We improve health through excellence and innovation in service, education and research, building on the strengths of our people, and partnerships."
The Wascana Rehabilitation Centre serves the population of southern Saskatchewan, providing comprehensive medical rehabilitation programs for adults and children, as well as specialized long-term care. The Adult Rehabilitation Program at Wascana Rehabilitation Centre offers an interdisciplinary rehabilitative service to adults who are medically stable and have a physical disability. We support and encourage a holistic approach to promote independence and quality of life for adults with physical disabilities and associated psychological, social and emotional issues.
The Wascana Children's Program supports families, health professionals and community caregivers to promote the optimal development of children with known or suspected physical and/or developmental disability.
We participate in the mission of the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region: “We are a provincial and community provider of a full range of safe, quality health services, education and research that inspires public confidence. We achieve success in meeting the diverse health needs of our communities through the strength of our people, partnerships and personal responsibility for health”.
