Welcome to the website of the Obesity Research Group at the University of Saskatchewan. The Obesity Research Group is one of the multi-disciplinary and collaborative ventures at the University of Saskatchewan focussed on developing a strong research environment in the health sciences.
As a risk factor for many chronic diseases, obesity is a major health concern. In Canada over the past two decades, there has been a doubling in rates of adult obesity and a tripling of childhood obesity rates. The World Health Organization recognizes obesity as a worldwide epidemic requiring immediate attention. To begin to resolve the issue of obesity and its associated co-morbidities is to understand that it is a complex, multi-factorial condition and thus can only be fully explored by an interdisciplinary approach. One of the areas of focus of the Obesity Research Group is the interactions between genetics and the environment in increasing levels of obesity.
The Obesity Research Group acknowledges funding from the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation, the College of Kinesiology, the College of Medicine, the College of Arts and Science, and the Office of the Vice-President Research.
