Thoracic surgery is the surgical subspecialty that deals with diseases of the chest (thorax), as well as the trachea, esophagus, and stomach.

Some of the more common conditions we treat include:  lung cancer, esophageal cancer, hiatus hernia (esophageal reflux), metastatic disease to the lung, and end-stage lung disease from any cause.  Many of these operations are performed using minimally invasive surgery ie. laparoscopic or video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) or endoscopic techniques. More unusual conditions treated by thoracic surgery include: myasthenia gravis, thymoma, hyperhidrosis, achalasia, tracheal strictures, and chest wall tumors such as sarcomas.

Since our patients suffer from numerous diseases, our surgical training has been very intense and extensive.

We are also educators to students and residents as well as mentors to actively involved in a fellowship training program mentoring future thoracic surgeons. Our success in postgraduate surgical education is well known across the country.

We participate in numerous clinical research projects offering new treatment options to our patient population.  These range from intra-hospital (local), to provincial, national, and global trials investigating new surgical procedures, new surgical techniques, new devices and new medications.

Our multidisciplinary team provides the best possible patient care coordinating services with Anesthesia, Clinical Nutrition, Medical Oncology, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Radiation Oncology, Radiology and Respirology.
